Top 10 NASA iTech Cycle 3 Finalists Announced

The top 10 entries in NASA iTech’s latest call for ideas have been selected and the innovators behind those ideas are invited to participate as finalists in the NASA iTech Forum. NASA iTech is a collaborative effort to find and foster innovative solutions that aim to solve challenges on Earth and also have the potential to solve some of NASA's challenges agencywide.

The top 10 finalists’ presentations are scheduled on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the culmination of the NASA iTech Forum, which will be held at Canon U.S.A., Inc. in Melville, New York. Representatives from NASA, other federal agencies, industry, the investment community, and others from across the U.S. will be on hand as the finalists for NASA iTech share their innovative ideas.

“NASA iTech is an innovation incubator that brings together the right people to the right place and time, giving entrepreneurs an opportunity to present their technologies as a future commercial market product solution for both Earth and NASA,” said Kira Blackwell, program executive for the Space Technology Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “The entrepreneurs who participate in NASA iTech are required to address both terrestrial and extraterrestrial challenges, providing the opportunity for the government to easily become a future ’off the shelf’ consumer.”

Leaders from NASA and prospective stakeholders will evaluate the most promising ideas submitted in the following focus areas: Augmented Reality Advancement, Medical Breakthrough, and X-Factor Innovation. The X-Factor Innovation category allows for entries that may not fit within a specific focus area, but clearly demonstrate the potential to fill a critical need for NASA and humans on Earth.                            

Teams representing the top three entries­ selected at the end of the forum will receive special recognition during a nonmonetary awards ceremony on Feb. 1 and will be available for press opportunities after the awards are announced.

“Over the last 12 months, many of the top 18 companies that have participated in NASA iTech have reported to have raised more than $50 million in private investments to further develop their technologies,” said Blackwell.

NASA iTech Selects Top 25 Semifinalists in Innovation Competition

NASA iTech has selected 25 of the most promising ideas submitted by innovators across the U.S. as semifinalists in Cycle 3.

NASA’s iTech is an initiative by NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) to find innovative ideas that address important problems here on Earth and also hold great potential to overcome critical technology hurdles in future space exploration. Those ideas may come from small or large businesses, academia, and other government organizations that may not have previously had a forum to present their solutions to NASA leadership or their industry partners.

“It’s always exciting to see the ideas that the top 25 semifinalists submit for each Cycle. The creativity and potential these entrepreneurs propose, to address some of space exploration’s toughest technical objectives are always very impressive,” said Kira Blackwell, NASA iTech program executive for STMD. “These entries also reflect groundbreaking approaches that could solve important problems here on Earth within our focus areas.”

In September, NASA iTech issued a call for solutions within focus areas including Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality Advancement, Autonomy, High Performance Computing and Medical Breakthrough. The popular NASA iTech Cycle 2 category, X-Factor Innovations, also returned in Cycle 3 to allow for trailblazing ideas or technologies that may not align precisely with another specific focus area, but could still make a significant impact on future exploration efforts.

A panel of subject matter experts representing NASA will now review the top 25 Cycle 3 semifinalist entries based on their relevance, likelihood of success, and potential positive impact on space exploration and life on Earth.

The top ten finalists for NASA’s iTech Cycle 3 will be announced on Dec. 18. These finalists will be invited to present their ideas to NASA’s chief technologists, space industry leaders and potential investors at the NASA iTech Cycle 3 Forum to be held at Canon U.S.A. in Melville, New York, on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, 2018.

NASA iTech Top 25 Semifinalists Announced

Twenty-five of the most promising ideas submitted by innovators across the U.S. are moving forward as semifinalists in the most recent challenge issued through NASA’s iTech initiative. NASA iTech is a yearlong effort to find innovative ideas that address challenges that will fill gaps in critical areas identified by NASA as having a potential impact on future space exploration.

This February, NASA iTech issued a call for white papers outlining possible solutions within five Cycle 2 challenge focus areas. A panel of subject matter experts representing NASA’s Office of the Chief Technologist are now reviewing the top 25 semifinalist entries based on their relevance, likelihood of achievement and potential positive impact to space exploration and life on Earth.

The top ten finalists will be announced on June 10. These finalists will be invited to present their ideas to NASA’s chief technologists, space industry leaders and potential investors at the 2017 NASA iTech Forum during NASA Langley Research Center’s Centennial celebrations in July.

NASA’s iTech is an initiative by NASA's Office of the Chief Technologist and is managed by the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) in Hampton, Virginia. The Office of the Chief Technologist (OCT) provides the strategy and leadership that integrates NASA’s technology development and innovation activities.

NASA Seeks Innovative Space Exploration Technology Ideas

Expanding on the success of the first NASA iTech Forum held last December, the second cycle of the NASA iTech initiative opens today with a call for white papers summarizing ideas that fill gaps in areas identified by NASA as having a critical impact on future space exploration.

The call for five-page white papers is the first phase of NASA iTech Cycle 2 and the next phase of a yearlong collaborative effort to find and foster innovative solutions from small and large businesses, universities, non-profits, U.S. government organizations outside of NASA and undiscovered inventors.

“The caliber of finalists presenting at the first iTech Forum was exceptional,” said Kira Blackwell, Innovation program executive in the Office of the Chief Technologist at NASA Headquarters, Washington. “This first cycle proved that remarkable solutions to our technical challenges could come from non-aerospace innovators as well."

The technology focus areas for NASA iTech Cycle 2 are: Autonomy, Big Data - Data Mining and Machine Learning, Medical Systems and Operations and Radiation Protection and Mitigation. An additional category, X-Factor Innovations: Solutions for Unspecified Future Challenges, has been added for this cycle to allow for groundbreaking ideas or technology that may not align precisely with another specific focus area, but could still make a significant impact on future exploration efforts.

The NASA iTech white paper and application are designed to simplify the review process and make it easier for anyone with potential solutions to participate. A panel of subject matter experts will review the papers and down-select the top 10 finalists based on their relevance and potential impact in the technology topic areas.

The iTech platform provides innovators a platform to collaborate directly with the innovators.  The top 10 finalists will be invited to present their ideas to NASA’s chief technologists, space industry leaders and potential investors at the 2017 NASA iTech Forum held at NASA’s Langley Research Center during their Centennial Celebration, July 10-14, 2017.

NASA iTech's call for innovative ideas is open from Feb. 23 through April 7 to all U.S. citizens and permanent residents on the NASA iTech website. NASA does not claim intellectual property rights to the ideas presented at the iTech Forum. The National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) is pleased to announce semifinalists for NASA's iTech initiative. NASA iTech is a yearlong effort to find innovative ideas that address challenges that will fill gaps in critical areas identified by NASA as having a potential impact on future exploration. NASA iTech issued a call for white papers outlining possible solutions to these challenges on September 21.

Innovators from 24 states across the U.S. submitted ideas in focus areas including radiation protection; life support systems in space; astronaut crew health; in-space propulsion; and the ability to achieve very high-resolution measurements of key greenhouse gasses.

A distinguished panel of experts established by NIA evaluated all eligible proposals against stringent criteria to determine the potential impact of the innovation in those focus areas as well as the scientific and business strength of each entry. These semifinalists will now move forward for further evaluation by a finalist panel of experts assembled by NASA’s Office of the Chief Technologist to determine the top 10 white papers. The top 10 finalists announced on November 21 will be invited to present their solutions to NASA and industry leadership at the NASA iTech Forum at NASA Headquarters in Washington, December 5-8. At the forum, finalists will have the opportunity to discuss their work with industry participants and explore new technology development partnerships. The top three solutions selected by judges at the end of the forum will also receive six months of additional mentoring to further mature the technologies.

NASA iTech Fosters Technology Needed for Journey to Mars

NASA is seeking innovative technology for the agency’s future exploration missions in the solar system and beyond, including the Journey to Mars, from other U.S. government agencies, academia, the aerospace industry and the public through the new iTech initiative.

NASA's iTech initiative is a yearlong effort to find innovative ideas through a call for white papers that address challenges that will fill gaps in five critical areas identified by NASA as having a potential impact on future exploration. The technology areas are: radiation protection; life support systems in space; astronaut crew health; in-space propulsion; and the ability to achieve very high-resolution measurements of key greenhouse gases.

“NASA has programs to address the agency’s current exploration goals, but we want to also include non-traditional innovators we haven’t heard from before,” said Kira Blackwell, Innovation program executive within NASA’s Office of the Chief Technologist in Washington. “NASA’s iTech is a collaborative effort with other agencies, universities, industry and the public to help us reach mutually beneficial technology goals.”

The iTech initiative is open to U.S. citizens, universities, organizations and businesses. The call for papers opens Sept. 21 and closes Oct. 17. A panel of subject matter experts will review the papers and down-select the top 10 finalists based on their relevance and potential impact in the technology topic areas.
